Director of Volunteer Engagement

Veterans for All Voters

The Director of Volunteer Engagement plays a vital role at Veterans for All Voters (VAV), building and sustaining the community of veterans and allies who drive our mission forward. This role is about people—meeting them where they are, guiding them through a ladder of engagement, and helping them find purpose and connection in the fight for a healthier democracy.

This leader will nurture relationships and create volunteer programs that leave people feeling supported, valued, and inspired. They’ll help veterans share their stories, connect volunteers to meaningful civic action, and ensure everyone can see their role in the ongoing service of building a healthier democracy.

We are looking for someone personable, proactive, and deeply committed to empowering others. Veterans and members of the military-connected community are strongly encouraged to apply.

• Volunteer Community Building: The Director of Volunteer Engagement will serve as the primary connector for VAV’s nationwide network of volunteers, cultivating relationships that foster trust, inclusion, and a sense of belonging. They will identify and support volunteer leaders who can help grow local and state-level engagement, ensuring that every volunteer feels connected to VAV’s mission.

• Program Development and Execution: This leader will design and implement a clear ladder of engagement to guide volunteers from initial contact to deeper leadership roles. They will develop training, resources, and events that equip volunteers to advocate effectively and collaborate across the organization to integrate volunteer power into legislative efforts, campaigns, and communications.

• Storytelling and Advocacy: The Director will work closely with the communications team to help volunteers craft and share their personal stories through testimony, media, op-eds, and social media channels. They will also represent VAV at events, conferences, and coalition meetings, expanding the organization’s network and strengthening relationships with partners and allies.

• Partnership and Community Connections: The Director will proactively build relationships with local, state, and national partner organizations working on democracy reform and civic engagement. They will help connect volunteers to these partners and community initiatives, ensuring that volunteers can engage in meaningful actions beyond VAV’s programs and contribute to a broader ecosystem of pro-democracy work.

• Operations and Impact Tracking: The role includes building and managing systems to track volunteer participation, engagement levels, and progress through the ladder of engagement. The Director will analyze program outcomes, identify opportunities for growth and improvement, and ensure that VAV’s volunteer efforts remain impactful and aligned with organizational goals.

We are open-minded about what makes someone a great fit for this role. You may bring many, or just some, of the following qualities and experiences:

• A people-first mindset and strong relationship-building skills.

• Familiarity working with veterans or military-connected communities, and a strong interest in veteran advocacy and democracy reform.

• Exposure to nonprofit, political, or entrepreneurial mission-driven environments.

• Experience developing programs or managing volunteers, community organizing, advocacy, or related fields.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively.

• Skill in storytelling for impact, whether personally or supporting others.

• The ability to work independently, solve problems creatively, and manage multiple priorities.

• Comfort navigating fast-paced, evolving, entrepreneurial environments, especially in nonprofit or mission-driven work.

• Ability to connect with post-9/11 veterans, including using social media, texting platforms, and digital campaigns to engage and mobilize volunteers.

• Proficiency with technology and digital tools to support volunteer engagement and track outcomes.

Veterans for All Voters is an equal opportunity employer. We believe our democracy is strongest when it includes diverse voices and experiences. Veterans and members of the military-connected community are strongly encouraged to apply.
