The right to vote doesn’t end with our service: Stars and Stripes

I’ll never forget the night of the 2000 presidential election. I was deployed to the Persian Gulf, watching the results come in from my squadron’s ready room aboard the USS George Washington. At first, over 20 of us were gathered around the TV. But as the night dragged on and Florida flipped from red to blue and back again, the room emptied out. By 3 a.m., I was still there — watching, waiting, wondering who my next commander in chief would be.
From local VFW posts to the national convention floor, veterans led the fight to ensure that all veterans–and all Americans–have the right to vote in elections their tax dollars help fund. What began as local resolutions became a full-court press for the Let America Vote Act (LAVA).

Veterans Spark Momentum for Fair Elections at VFW National Convention

This weekend at the VFW National Convention in Ohio—one of the largest annual gatherings of veterans in the country—something important happened.

Thanks to our founder Eric Bronner and incredible volunteers like John Keene and David Oclander, a historic resolution in support of the bipartisan Let America Vote Act (LAVA) was brought forward for consideration by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

The resolution did not advance this time, but it sparked real momentum. We are grateful to the veterans who led this effort and encouraged by the growing support nationwide. Across the country, more and more veterans are standing up for fair and open elections.

We leave Columbus more committed than ever to this mission.
