I’m writing from Reno with incredible news. Yesterday, the VFW National Convention approved Resolution 435, protecting mail-in ballots and reasonable grace periods for military and overseas voters.
This resolution was written, proposed, and fought for entirely by Veterans for All Voters members. I do not say this lightly—this is one of the biggest victories in VAV’s five-year history. More personally, it is exactly the kind of fight I dreamed veterans would take on when I founded this organization. A hard, practical fight to make sure the people serving our country can fully exercise the rights they defend.
And this victory was built from the ground up.
Dozens of VAV members brought the resolution to their local VFW Posts across the country. Montana and Colorado advanced it through their state conventions. David Oclander, our Montana state leader, co-led this effort with me from the beginning and brought the persistence, judgment, and credibility that kept it moving.
Then came Reno.
Wendy Silvera of Montana and John Keene of Colorado fought for the resolution in committee meetings, side conversations and on the convention floor. And Mike Escobar of Nevada represented VAV in the Exhibit Hall, talking to VFW members about our work and resolution. All three of them are VAV members and Marine veterans.
When the mission gets hard, send in the Marines!
They answered tough questions, worked the room, and helped carry this across the finish line. But none of us did this alone. This victory belongs to every VAV member who made a call, spoke at a Post, worked through a state convention, or convinced one more veteran that this fight mattered.
Because of your work, the VFW’s national team will now carry this position into its advocacy in Washington and across the country. It will support mail-in voting access and reasonable grace periods for overseas voters, and oppose federal efforts that make their lawful ballots harder to count.
This is what continued service looks like. Veterans working together to solve a hard problem for everyday Americans, our neighbors, and our fellow veterans.
